The Forward Recovery Method™
Recovery begins with refusal, not acceptance.
When life breaks the pattern, through trauma, loss, or upheaval, most advice starts with accepting what happened. The Forward Recovery Method™ starts somewhere different: with the part of you that refuses to let this be the end of the story.
A Different Starting Point
A map for the terrain nobody chooses
The Forward Recovery Method™ is a structured recovery methodology: five phases, each with its own mobilizing question, that trace the full arc from refusal to rebuilding.
Where most models begin
Familiar frameworks treat acceptance as the doorway to healing. Resistance gets labeled denial, something to move past as quickly as possible.
Where this one begins
The FRM treats resistance as the first act of recovery. Refusing to accept the unacceptable is not pathology. It is the moment you wake up and take your place in the story.
This is not a wellness program and not resilience training. It is a map for people walking through the hardest terrain of their lives, and for the people walking beside them.
The Framework
The Five Phases
Each phase carries a mobilizing question and an archetype: a companion figure that embodies the work of that season.
PHASE I
Resistance
The Wild Stallion
The Awakening
What in the status quo must I, must we, refuse to accept?
PHASE II
Resilience
The Elephant
The First Response
What can I, can we, do not to make the situation worse?
PHASE III
Recovery
The Salmon
Gaining Momentum
What can I, can we, do now that will create momentum?
PHASE IV
Rediscovery
The Owl
The Wilderness Phase
What no longer serves me, serves us, that must be let go?
PHASE V
Regeneration
The Monarch Butterfly
Becoming the New
What do I, do we, need to build that does not yet exist?
The Spiral
Not a straight line. A spiral.
Recovery is nonlinear and recursive. You will revisit phases you thought you had finished, and you may stand in more than one phase at once. Returning to earlier terrain is not regression: it is a deeper pass through familiar ground, with more wisdom than you carried the first time.
The phases are a map, not a prescription.
The Fractal Principle
The same pattern, at every scale
The five phases hold whether the disruption strikes one life, one family, one team, or one community. That is why every mobilizing question is asked two ways, as I and as we: each of us carries a portion of the recovery, no matter our role.
A Note from the Founder
This framework was not built in a library. It began at my son Joseph's bedside in an intensive care unit, in the long vigil that followed his traumatic brain injury. In those rooms I learned that the journey through the unthinkable has a shape, and that naming the shape gives people something to hold.
The Forward Recovery Method™ is what I wish someone had handed me on the first night. I offer it now to anyone standing where I stood.
